What is the differance between an EIDE and a SATA Hard drive?

Im in the market to buy a notebook and I am offered either/or hard drives.
In particular, a 250gb EIDE hard drive versus a 160gb SATA hard drive.
What is the differance and which is most efficient?

IDE is the older format and SATA is the newer format.

Laptops generally only use ONE of these two formats, you must check your hardware (motherboard specifically) or you can take out the your current hard disk (remove battery first) and look up its model number to see what kind it is (IDE or SATA)… if it’s SATA that’s good. If your laptop is new it’s probably SATA. The SATA drive would probably be faster but you want to look at the write speed at cache… Write speeds for laptop hard drives are usually 5400 RPM… 7200RPM is really good and about the most you’ll find for a laptop.
