Can I put an ATA/133 hard drive in an Enhanced IDE enclosure?

I have an old 80GB external USB Western Digital hard drive. I can peek in through the vent to read “Enhanced IDE Hard Drive.”

“Enhanced IDE” is another way of saying ATA/100. As Stu said your drive will fit physically and there should not be a problem with connectors. The Maxtor should recognize the ATA/100 interface and “fall back” to that speed to communicate with the enclosure. The firmware in the enclosure is a good issue also. You may want to check on Western Digital’s web site to see if there is a firmware upgrade to recognized larger capacity drives otherwise your 250Gb may only report back as 80Gb.
